A Journey Through Youth Soccer in Nevada: Insights from Bob Briare
A Personal Journey
Until November 2023, I had spent my entire life in the vibrant city of Las Vegas, a place known for its glitz and glamour. However, a new chapter began when I relocated to Reno. My professional journey has been equally dynamic. For years, I worked in the hotel industry, a sector that thrives on hospitality and service. In 2016, I took a leap of faith and transitioned to the Nevada Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) as the Executive Director. This role allowed me to channel my passion for youth sports into a meaningful cause. By 2018, I became the tournament director for one of the largest international youth soccer tournaments in the nation, the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup. Now, as the Director of Northern Nevada Soccer, I am excited to contribute to the growth and development of soccer in my new community.
Understanding the Nevada Youth Soccer Association
The Nevada Youth Soccer Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to overseeing and managing youth soccer activities throughout Nevada. As the state association of the United States Youth Soccer Association, NYSA serves as the governing body for youth soccer in the state. Our mission is to promote the development of soccer for players aged 5 to 19, providing various services and programs that enhance the experience for players, coaches, and families alike.
The Importance of NYSA in Youth Soccer
NYSA plays a crucial role in the youth soccer landscape of Nevada. We establish rules and policies that ensure consistency and fairness across leagues, tournaments, and teams. Our organization provides essential training for coaches and referees, as well as educational resources for parents. One of our key initiatives is the Olympic Development Program, which serves as a pathway for talented players to reach college, professional levels, and even the U.S. National Team.
In addition to player development, we oversee competitions, including the Nevada State Champions, who advance to compete in the USYS National Championship Series. Safety is our top priority; we enforce regulations such as concussion protocols and safeguarding policies. Every adult interacting with children in our programs undergoes a background check and completes rigorous Safe Sport Training, aimed at preventing abuse in sports. Our goal is to create a safe and enjoyable soccer experience for Nevada’s youth and their families.
Evolution of Youth Sports in Nevada
The landscape of youth sports in Nevada has undergone significant changes over the years. In the early days of organized leagues, soccer was often a casual affair, with fathers forming teams from church groups. However, about 25 years ago, the emergence of soccer clubs began to transform the scene. These clubs hired professional coaches to attract players, leading to a competitive environment not just on the field but also in terms of recruitment and financial sustainability.
Today, youth soccer is a lucrative industry, and clubs must navigate the complexities of competing for players, training spaces, and fundraising opportunities. This financial aspect adds a layer of challenge to our mission at NYSA, as we strive to maintain the integrity and accessibility of the sport.
The Future of Youth Sports in Nevada
Looking ahead, the future of youth sports in Nevada, particularly soccer, is intertwined with the availability of field space. As new sports gain popularity, such as girls’ flag football, competition for limited resources intensifies. The Reno area, in particular, faces challenges in providing adequate field space for various sports. Organizations like the Great Basin Youth Soccer League are taking the initiative to spearhead new soccer field developments, which is essential for accommodating the growing demand for youth sports.
Soccer’s Place Among Youth Sports
While soccer remains a top choice for youth sports, it faces competition from other activities. Parents today have a wealth of options for their children, and I believe it’s essential for kids to explore various sports. The Great Basin Soccer League offers an excellent program for young soccer players, but I encourage families to allow their children to try different sports. Ultimately, the goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment that promotes physical activity, teamwork, and social skills.
Resources Offered by NYSA
NYSA is committed to supporting the development of players, coaches, referees, and leagues through a variety of resources. We offer player development programs, including the Olympic Development Program, as well as coaching and licensing courses. Referees benefit from certification, training, and mentorship opportunities. Additionally, we provide health and safety resources, such as concussion protocols and risk management strategies. NYSA also organizes tournaments, including state championships, and ensures that all adults involved with players complete background checks and Safe Sport Training.
The Role of Discipline in Youth Sports
Discipline on the field is a critical aspect of youth sports, affecting not only the players but also parents and spectators. As the Vice President of Discipline on the NYSA board, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by inappropriate parental behavior. While most parents agree that negative actions towards referees and players are unacceptable, some still succumb to the heat of competition. It’s vital to hold clubs accountable for managing spectator behavior, as the actions of adults can significantly impact the experience of young athletes.
The Benefits of Soccer for Youth
Soccer is an ideal sport for children, offering a fun way to stay active while developing essential life skills. On the field, players enhance their strength, speed, and coordination, contributing to their overall fitness. Beyond physical benefits, soccer fosters teamwork, boosts confidence, and instills discipline. The sport encourages players to think strategically, work collaboratively, and develop resilience—all while forming friendships and enjoying the game. Soccer truly embodies the perfect blend of fitness, camaraderie, and personal growth.
